One hour of moderate recreational skating (6 mph) can burn as much as 280 calories. This is done at very low impact which reduces the pounding damage & shock effects caused by jogging while providing as much or more health benefit. This reduces joint injury which in turn reduces the possibility of arthritis in those joints. Increasing the speed or intensity of those skating sessions (10 mph) can increase calorie burning up to 590 calories per hour. Skating also works the inner and outer thigh muscles which jogging does not .
Roller skating is recognized by the American Lung Association as a benefit to aerobic health & conditioning and also by the American Heart Association as a benefit to cardiovascular health and conditioning.
Roller skating can be done at your local skating rink during any weather. Visit your local rink to take advantage of a climate controlled exercise area. Most, if not all, skating rinks offer rental equipment to those who might need it also. This eliminates the need to purchase costly equipment if you do not want to.
The whole family can roller skate together. This promotes interaction not only within the family but also with others.
Exercise, learn, have fun, make new friends, socialize and listen to music all at once, without the worry of traffic or weather, in a controlled and monitored environment.
